Mob justice is a group of people taking the law into their own hands to execute judgment upon an alleged criminal. Lack of faith in the police and judicial system are some of the common reasons mob justice occur. For example, in India, where sexual violence against women and girls is a national problem, mob justice continues to rise. Recently, in Arunachal Pradesh, one of the 29 states of India, two men accused of raping and killing a five-year-old girl, were lynched by an angry mob of 1,200.

Mob justice, include but is not limited to, cases of sexual assault in India. It is a global issue involving cases of theft or religious persecution, to name a few. In regard to sexual violence against women and girls in India, convicting criminals is a step forward to strengthening the judicial process and possibly restoring citizen’s faith in the judicial system.
